Who remembers “Professor”Jimmy Edwards? This charming man has become something of a gay and spanko icon these days.
His handsome handlebar moustache hid scars from wartime plastic surgery, the result of a Douglas Dakota (Skytrain) air crash.
He was a war hero – awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his bravery.
He is rather better remembered for his politically incorrect TV series “Whack-O!” in which he played a drunken, gambling, cane-wielding headmaster. You can find clips of a black and white episode of the show on YouTube. There was also a spin-off feature film called “Bottoms Up!”. The film and TV shows were scripted by odd couple Denis Norden and Frank Muir, who should really have known better! It’s quite conceivable that the shows gave the impression that caning was harmless fun, and I dare say some real victims had a very rude awakening as a result. Despite this, many remember the Prof with affection. You can read more about the man at the Wikipedia pages http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Edwards and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whack-O! Even the BBC has a page devoted to Whack-O! at http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/whacko/
